the grito (independence day)

Click here to see some photographs from this year’s celebration on the main square in Mérida.

Here we see Enna, Juan, and Karen preparing themselves. Mexican independence day is celebrated at midnight on September 15th. Everyone gathers in the square and are lead in the shout.
Viva México!
VIVA (yells the crowd)
Viva Hidalgo! (a founding father)
{then there are about 6 other shouts to other founders of modern México, continuing with}
Viva Yucatán!
Viva Mérida!
… and so on!
then the fireworks begin.
