80º and rainy in mérida
As I walked out of my house in the pouring rain – with streets flooding in the Centro – and wondering what kind of maneuvers I would have to pull – not to stay dry, but – to avoid becoming sprayed with dirty flood water, I stopped and waited for the police truck to pass. But he stopped and strangely we were at an impasse – imagine it’s a 4 way stop sign when everyone is there at once. I waved him on, convinced I had my back up far enough to the wall that he would miss me with the water, but he INSISTED I pass. I mean he w a i t e d for me to pass. So, not wanting trouble with the law, I walked on and we exchanged smiles and waves. I was so grateful for this small courtesy. Later, walking downtown with the big buses, the one beside me was going slow even though he could have sped up no question, and I know it was because he was being nice to me. Qué Dios me bendice.
